This came in just needing a service really, it worked ok but the pilot bulbs had both blown, therefore there was no backlight for the tuning dial. First thing I noticed was the mains filter capacitor had blown one end out so that got replaced. After a good clean to get rid of years of dust I was able to do some more testing. The speaker was almost seized and had to be replaced, there was a bulge in the main reservoir cap so that was also replaced. A recommended mod is to change the value of the IF bypass cap from 0.003uf to 0.001uf so I did that. Now on to the pilot lamps, not a very efficient circuit, two 3.5v lamps running straight off the mains input with a shunt resistor in parallel with them, in this case 75 ohms, a recommendation is to increase the value of that resistor to 150 ohms, although I have seen some sites suggesting 250 ohms, all in an attempt to get some brightness out of the lamps, with the 75 ohm resistor in parallel the new lamps would barely glow so I went all the way to 250 ohms, still not terribly bright but acceptable. After a clean of all the controls and a wipe over of the cabinet it was ready to go home.
