Sharp VZ-3000

I’m not sure what I did wrong in a previous life but I seem to get a constant stream of these in for repair. Ok, they’re an interesting item, especially to anyone that likes something a bit retro, and when working properly, they perform very well. I remember working on them when they were new back in the early 80’s, they’re a bit of a mission to strip down, but once that’s done they’re not that bad to work on.

Being of a ‘certain age’ they are starting to show their age a little, I’ve had several in for repair that have had the turntable drive belt turn to liquid rubber, it can make a hell of a mess! It’s a bit of an entertaining job to replace it but apart from that the only things likely to give trouble on the turntable are the the stylii and the door / tonearm drive belt.

The tape decks usually benefit from new belts and a good clean up, but apart from that they faired very well, I’ve never had a problem with any of the motors, even after 40 years of use. One thing that usually needs a good clean up in this section is the record / playback switch, now that is a bit of a job, it has be removed from the printed circuit by desoldering some thirty + pins and four lugs holding it in place, then it has to be stripped down and all thirty contact points cleaned up. Symptoms of this include humming, buzzing and rustling noises whilst playing a tape.

The pins and contacts of the rec / playback switch

Electronically they are wearing very well, stock faults seem to be dry joints on the transformer panel, scratchy controls and the audio switching relay. All these things are repairable.

  1. Hi I have the Above VZ-3000. Push the on button and no response, i have replaced the 7 internal fuses and tested all OK ? So at a loss.
Any advise, i could courier the system down to you if you would be interested in repairing it.

    1. You would probably need some electronics knowledge and diagnostic skills to sort that out. Feel free to send it to me if you can’t find anyone in your area.
