I didn’t have a lot of hope for this Hi-Fi as it had just come from a few decades in someone’s loft. The owner said the turntable was not turning, my immediate thought was a seized motor or platter. Getting it on the bench I was able to rule out a seized platter as it turned freely, the next move was to remove the platter and have a look at the motor and jockey wheel. This was where the problem lay, the jockey wheel was sitting way below the level of the platter and therefore not making any contact with it. The reason for this was the rubber suspension on the motor had perished allowing the whole assembly of motor and jockey wheel to drop down on it’s mountings. Being 50 years old spare parts were not available so I had to make my own from rubber washers which seemed to work perfectly. The owner had obviously given it a go before contacting me as the motor, in it’s collapsed position had been grinding on the chassis, showering the power supply with metal filings, which had in turn blown two fuses. I cleaned the panel of all metal and replaced the fuses to be greeted with a working radio section. Now to test the turntable, once again, due to the age of the Hi-Fi, there was a lot of congealed grease on the mechanism, notably on the auto return mechanism, meaning the auto return function was operating continually, so a good clean up of the old grease and re application of new grease had it all working perfectly.
