Back to the Toshiba SR-V10, faults reported were that it doesn’t lift on and off the record cleanly and that it doesn’t track to the end of the record. Well, inside there somewhere is a mechanism that probably just needed a service, getting into it was another matter though, I couldn’t figure it out so I put it aside while I got the service manual. Once I had that it was simple – six screws and the deck was out, however, the manual never explained the next bit – getting the mechanism out of the deck. I found to do that, the tone arm had to be wound into a position where it aligned with a slot in the deck, not easy as I had turn a worm gear through a very small inspection hole, it took ages but eventually the mechanism was out. I found a piece of broken plastic stuck at the end of the tone arms runner so I removed that and made sure the runner was cleaned and lubricated and that the tone arm ran up and down smoothly…it did, so now it was on to the belt that drives the tone arm, it was pretty ‘wooden’ so I replaced that. Lastly the tone arm wasn’t lifting on and off properly because of a bent lever, so it was trying to lift the tone arm but not getting it high enough, that was soon bent back into shape. Now to reassemble, lots of fiddling and cursing later it was back together and playing perfectly.
Definitely not a machine that’s made to be worked on!
