Yet Another Sharp VZ-3000 Repair

Yet another Sharp vertical turntable, don’t know what I’ve done to deserve these things, but seemingly I’m not the first person to look at it. I was told it had poor volume on the turntable but all I had was a nasty hum with some interference in the background. Looking at the motor control / preamp board I noticed it had been sprayed with something, every component was wet, it may have been some kind of cleaner, not sure, but the panel didn’t like it, so I had to clean everything up with isopropyl alcohol and a tooth brush after which the humming and interference were gone…but it didn’t end there, this thing has two tone arms so you can play both sides of the record without turning it over, side A needed a new cartridge after which it was fine but side B was only playing out of one speaker, this was down to the notorious switching relay, which I’ve run out of, I tried to clean the contacts but never have much success doing that so a new one is on order from China. What the relay does is take the audio from whichever cartridge is selected and feed it to the preamp and is very prone to fail giving all sorts of problems 🙄
Edit…the relay is fitted and both sides of the record are now playing perfectly, the only thing left to do was sort out the fast forward and rewind on the tape deck and a quick clean up of the rubber idlers had that sorted. These things are always a bit challenging to put back together but all up and running now!
